Why should I use Safe Harbor Resolution instead of one of those big tax resolution firms or my local CPA or Enrolled Agent (EA)?
Your case will be handled by an attorney. You will get the highest level of confidentiality allowed by law. Most of those tax resolution firms cannot offer the protections that the attorney-client privilege and attorney work product doctrine can provide. Our staff are trained in personalized service and we limit the number of cases we will take.
What Tax Issues Can You Handle?
Our team of professionals are able to work through most any Federal tax issue.
Depending on the state, we can also work directly or with a local partner to resolve state and local tax issues.
We are licensed to practice before the IRS and are admitted to the US Tax Court and other jurisdictions. Our lawyers and CPAs are able to assess your situation quickly and advise on a course of action.
If I engage with Safe Harbor, do I need to meet with the IRS anymore?
In most cases – no. We step into your shoes. However, whether it is audit defense or tax resolution, the IRS has very strict deadlines. If you are not getting information to your attorney or paralegal quickly, the IRS may issue an appearance summons or request an in-person meeting. The key to success in resolving tax issues is open communication with your attorney and keeping to the IRS timelines.
Will I go to jail for not filing or paying my taxes?
It is rare that a taxpayer goes to jail – especially for an honest mistake or a difficult financial situation. The key is working with counsel and the IRS to resolve the tax situation in good faith, because failure to file is potentially a felony. Deliberate misreporting, hiding assets or other bad faith actions may change that answer. The best bet is to engage a lawyer – someone who can represent you and maintain confidentiality – to talk through your concerns.
If I ignore this IRS notice, will it go away?
Unfortunately, no. The IRS will not "forget" about it with everything else they have going on. In fact, penalties and interest can accrue daily so delay is expensive. The best bet is to get started on resolving the issue as quickly as possible. The sooner you start, the sooner it will be over and you can move on.
The faster we get engaged, the better the situation is likely to end up.
What is "Restructuring"?
Tax problems often are a sign of significant financial and operational trouble in a business or household. We have consultants with decades of experience who are able to assess the root cause of these problems and help restructure your situation for success.
That may look like operational consulting or life coaching all the way to a voluntary assignment of assets for the benefit of creditors, sale of the business, or even bankruptcy. We use our experience and all tools available - working with you every step of the way to get you through your current storm.
